Marilyn lived in a 1972 single-wide mobile home, but needed some assistance. Her home was uncomfortably drafty.
SNAP’s Weatherization inspector assessed her home and crews got busy and replaced two broken windows, installed new kitchen and bath fans, replaced a poorly fitting door and repaired another and fixed the home’s leaky duct work. Health and safety repairs included venting the clothes dryer to the outside, installing smoke detectors and a carbon monoxide detector and servicing the gas oven to reduce carbon monoxide emissions. The attic was insulated, plumbing repairs were made and both the hot and cold water pipes were wrapped.
Marilyn’s refrigerator was about 25 years old and easily qualified for replacement under SNAP’s refrigerator replacement program. The new refrigerator figures to save her more than $100 per year with a payback period of four-and-a-half years.
The total cost for weatherizing Marilyn’s home was $3,173. She now pays her energy bill on a monthly level billing system, paying the same amount each month of the year. It’s too soon to assess how much she will save in energy costs, but she says the house was far more comfortable this winter.
