Without a bank account, it is difficult to ensure that your money is safe. Having a bank account makes it easier to save and track your finances. Second Chance Banking is a program aimed at restoring banking privileges to people who are unable to get a checking or savings account, usually due to prior overdrafts. We can also help people who have never had a bank account and need help with learning how to use one, or who are threatened with losing their account.
ACCESS partners with three credit unions to bring you a bank account:
How to restore your banking privileges:
Step 1: Attend a 3 hour Money Management Class (money management)
Step 2: Receive your free savings account, along with free direct deposit of your paycheck if you choose. You will actually receive two savings accounts, one for your daily needs and one for saving for future needs. You will also receive free money orders for paying your bills, until you get your checking account.
Step 3: Receive Money Management Coaching (money management), where you will prepare a budget, discuss your financial goals, review your credit report, and prepare a plan for repairing your credit and reaching your goals.
Step 4: Receive an ATM card. After 3 months, if you have been participating in the program and keeping a positive balance in your savings account, we will recommend to your credit union that you receive an ATM card. (The final decision rests with the credit union)
Step 5: Receive a checking account. After 6 months, if you have been participating in the program, keeping a positive balance in your savings account, and making payments toward your delinquent debts, we will recommend to your credit union that you receive a checking account. (The final decision rests with the credit union)
Step 6: After 1 year of successful banking you will ‘graduate’ into full credit union privileges.
